Description
Offered for your consideration is an unusual vintage 8" carbon steel general purpose knife. This is a handmade knife that was crafted from a Lenox saw blade. The maker was obviously a highly skilled craftsman and an experienced knifemaker. Prior to WWI and the widespread acceptance of knives made specifically for sportsmen, most folks went afield with a common butcher or skinning knife on their belt. This piece would also make for a great belt knife, especially for the buckskinner/mountain man/fur trapper enthusiast.
The knife has seen light to moderate use and remains very nice with no problems at all. It has not been buffed or polished and remains original. It looks as though the blade may have been cleaned (especially just forward of the handle) long ago, although I can't determine whether the steel was simply cleaned a bit prior to making the knife.
This is a very solid, well-made knife with a great look all the way around. The long carbon steel blade is free of any significant corrosion or pitting with just some scattered small spots of the usual fine surface peppering as shown. The surfaces display a nice carbon patina that's even on both sides of the blade. The blade is free of errant grinder marks or harsh sharpening abrasions, although it has been sharpened displaying just a bit of sharpening loss as shown. The edge is free of any chips, dings, nicks, or damage and remains very nice with just some normal wear. It remains somewhat sharp and the knife is ready for immediate use, although a quick touch-up on a good stone or hone would have it razor sharp in no time. The fine carbon steel blade will quickly take a wicked edge that's easy to maintain. The tip is intact and original with no breaks or bending. The blade offers just a slight hint of flexibility and it has plenty of backbone for the tougher cutting. The handle was shaped from solid hardwood and it remains rock-solid. The handle has four hand cut notches, one on each bevel just behind the front rivet. The wood shows none of the dishwasher fade/bleaching that's so common to wood handles, with no water exposure damage from normal sink washing either. The handle was tightly pinned and it's free of any cracks, chips gouges, or damage with just some normal light wear. The surfaces remain silky-smooth and the beautifully aged wood has a warm, rich feel in the hand. The handle markings remain fully visible and bold.
The knife measures 13" in overall length.
A very nice, handcrafted knife with a classic look!
