Description
Offered for your consideration is a great-looking vintage Primble Hickory 7" carbon steel butcher and/or general purpose knife. This knife was likely made under contract by Ontario Knife Co. for Belknap Hardware. Prior to WWI and the widespread acceptance of knives made specifically for sportsmen, most folks went afield with a common butcher or skinning knife on their belt. This piece would also make for a great belt knife, especially for the buckskinner/mountain man/fur trapper enthusiast.
The knife has seen light to moderate use and remains very nice with no problems at all. It has not been buffed or polished and remains original. The knife shows no signs of abuse or rough treatment and it's been well cared for over the many years.
This is a great example of this solid, well-made knife. The sturdy, carbon steel blade is free of any significant corrosion or pitting with just a couple scattered small spots of the usual fine surface peppering as shown. The surfaces display a nice carbon patina that's even on both sides of the blade. The blade is free of any errant grinder marks or harsh sharpening abrasions and it appears to retain its original factory edge. The edge is free of any chips, dings, nicks, or damage and remains very nice with just some normal wear. It remains somewhat sharp and the knife is ready for immediate use, although a quick touch-up on a good stone or hone would have it razor sharp to deliver optimum performance. The tip is intact and original with no breaks or bending and the spine is free of any dings, dents, marring, or damage. The thick hardwood handle remains rock-solid and completely tight. The handle shows none of the dishwasher fade/bleaching that's so common to wood handles, with no water exposure damage from normal sink washing either. The handle was tightly pinned and it's free of any cracks, chips, marring, or damage with just some normal light wear and a small, shallow dig under the rear rivet on the front side as shown. The surfaces remain silky-smooth and the beautifully aged wood has a warm, rich feel in the hand.
The knife measures 11-3/4" in overall length.
A very nice, original example of this classic, American-made knife!
