Maker's name "長江陶業(Nagae Tougyo)" along with serial number is marked on the bottom. There is also a sticker that reads "Seto-yaki"(瀬戸焼). 'Seto-yaki' is a general term for porcelain products made in Seto Japan, which includes all kinds of porcelain items such as animal, human, Disney and more figurines, and also chinaware for practical as well as decorative purposes. "Seto" is a city located in the center of Japan, and is also the center for Japan's ceramics industry.
This item is
new, fresh from the kiln
, though it was cast out of a vintage mold probably dating back to the '70s or '80s, that was handed down from former manufacturer.
In those days, a large quantity of dog figurines was produced in Japan and exported worldwide under various brand names, such as Shafford, Napco or Lefton... Those manufacturers now no longer exist. However, some of their casting molds have been passed down and some dog breeds are still made in a small way in a small factory run by a husband and wife team, where this dog statue was also made.
